True and False: Titanic History (Page 8)

What was Titanic?
R.M.S Titanic (aka Royal Mail Steamer/Steamship) Titanic was an ocean liner that sailed from April 10th 1912 at Southampton, England to what was intended to be New York City, but sank on April 14/15th 1912. She was built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland and was intended to be part of a trio of sister ships for White Star Line.

Myth #8: More Lifeboats = More Saved?
It's a novel idea to think that more lifeboats would've saved more passengers that night. Unfortunately, it really isn't true at all.

1. Of the 20 Lifeboats they had available, they only launched 18 in the time they had remaining. The Welin davits they had required a lot of effort to get the boats swung out.

2. Passengers were unwilling to leave the ship for a variety of reasons from leaving behind loved ones to feeling safer on board.

3. Lifeboats were also seen as ferries to move passengers from a sinking ship to a rescue ship. This worked successfully in the incident between RMS Republic and SS Florida and was likely in the minds of everyone on board.

4. RMS Lusitania had 48 lifeboats and was unable to launch more than half of them, partly due to the high list she was experiencing.

5. There was also a fear that the davits wouldn't hold many more passengers than they could actually carry. Though James Cameron's film isn't entirely accurate, it does highlight this issue.
