Titanic History: The Truth (Page 3)

What was Titanic?
R.M.S Titanic (aka Royal Mail Steamer/Steamship) Titanic was an ocean liner that sailed from April 10th 1912 at Southampton, England to what was intended to be New York City, but sank on April 14/15th 1912. She was built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland and was intended to be part of a trio of sister ships for White Star Line.

Fact #3: Funnels
Probably one of her most iconic features (and feature of any ship back then).

1. The lower half of the funnels are painted in what is known as "White Star Buff".
2. Each funnel stood about 62 feet tall with each being slightly taller to account for the ship's hull sheer.

3. Each funnel is raked (or tilted) about 10 degrees

4. There were actually two layers to each funnel, the inner funnel and the outer funnel (which most of us are probably familiar with).
5. The outer funnel is made of about 1/2" thick steel, which is partly why they don't hold their shape well once in water.
